Customs Entry Automation - ABI and ACH

The Automated Broker Interface (ABI) is a component of the U.S. Customs Service's Automated Commercial System that permits qualified participants to electronically file required import data with Customs. ABI is a voluntary program available to brokers, importers, carriers, port authorities, and independent service centers. Currently, over 96% of all entries filed with Customs are filed through ABI.

With ABI, you, the importer can:

  • Receive conditional cargo release results up to five days before the ocean conveyance arrives, one day for air transport, same day for truck transport and rail transport.
  • File entry release data electronically for cargo release.
  • File consumption entries, TIB entries, FTZ entries, and warehouse withdrawals for consumption.
  • Update entry dates electronically.
  • Change selected shipping details on entries in Customs status up until the time cargo arrives.
  • Certify entry summary for cargo release processing--a separate 3461 transaction is not required.
  • Receive priority handling through exam/release processing (including quota and on-stop-quota).
  • File drawback claims electronically.
  • Pay statements electronically through the Automated Clearinghouse (ACH).

The benefits to you, besides the customs brokerage fees of $60 to $150 per entry charged by customs brokers that translates to savings of between $62,000 to $156,000 a year if you have about 20 imports a week, are:

  • Expedited cargo release.
  • Electronic transmission, validation, confirmation, and correction for entry summaries.
  • Payment options such as daily statement and electronic payment through the Automated Clearinghouse (ACH).
  • Validated duties, taxes, and fees.
  • Interactive communication with Customs.
  • Courtesy notices of liquidation, extension, and suspension.
  • Consolidated reports under the National Importer Liquidation Program.
  • Error statistics available monthly.
  • Timely tariff updates.
  • Query capabilities such as HTS, Manufacturer, Quota/Visa, Bond, Administrative Messages and so on.
  • Uniform entry summary processing.

The purpose shall be to eliminate U.S. customs entry fees and service charges and establish a direct link with U.S. Customs' electronic system.
